If you’re thinking about upgrading or adding to your software then you might want to look at all of the options before placing your order. Open source software is free (with some associated costs) and features many of the same applications as other leading software brands. There’s more about open source options at www.icthub.org.uk/managing_ICT/open_source_1.html. Communities and Local Government has announced a new 'Asset Transfer Unit', which will be led by the Development Trusts Association. The unit will offer an independent hub of advice for local people and authorities to help community groups take control of disused public buildings if they can prove they can put them to better use. It is expected to open for business in January 2009.

CLG has also announced twelve 'participatory budgeting' or 'community kitties' pilot areas, engaging local people in how public money is spent. http://www.communities.gov.uk/news/corporate/968816
