Volunteering in John Storer House

Tea Bar Volunteer
Please call in to JSH to learn about our in-house volunteering opportunities. We produce a booklet (see below) listing all our opportunities including volunteering in our Tea Bar, with adminstration, befriending and driving which can be collected from Reception.
Volunteering Opportunity of the Month - Help with the Tea Bar
Volunteers are required for sessions in the Tea Bar, serving hot and cold snacks and drinks, which is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm and Saturday 9.30 to 12 noon.
Please contact Karen Chamberlain on 01509 631772.
'The Experience Of A Lifetime' - Celebrating the contribution of older volunteers in Leicestershire
The following is an excerpt from a brochure produced by the LeicesterShire Volunteer Centre Network. Gopaldas Popat and Norah Smith both volunteer at John Storer House and their comments clearly show the benefits of volunteering.
Gopaldas Popat is the Treasurer of the Loughborough Sathi Group. This is a weekly drop-in where people aged 50+ who are socially or culturally isolated can come to make friends and be themselves (the word 'Sathi' means companion). He says, 'I wanted to give something back to society .... we have taken so much out of it, now I think it's time we all give back'.
Gopaldas has also volunteered for the Shepshed Disabled Swimming Group and the Citizen's Jury at County Hall. He says, 'I get personal satisfaction .... I've always enjoyed meeting people. I'm quite comfortable in a group and one interest leads to another one'.

The Sathi Group
Norah Smith has volunteered for many years. She started in 1993 with the Meals on Wheels service and has also volunteered for Loros and more recently in the JSH Tea Bar. She says, 'I just did it when I lost my husband and all my family were away' and that she 'would recommend it to anyone as long as they commit themselves to it'.
